Peer Support Training

On Thursday 30/10 and Friday 31/10 , 24 year 9 students underwent Peer Support training . These students will work with new year 8 students coming into Wirreanda in 2015 . This year we decided to allow staff the opportunity to nominate future leaders and also through self nomination . Establishing a peer support program at Wirreanda works towards preventing incidences of bullying amongst students. Programs where older students support and work with younger students, create caring and supportive school communities. This enables students to feel safe and unrestricted in their physical, social and mental development.
Both in formal and informal settings, peer supporters are skilled in communication, have the ability to listen actively and to utilise a problem-solving approach when discussing a peer’s issue. Taking part in a peer support program not only requires peer supporters to demonstrate a range of skills but will also, by their very participation, increase their skill base as they encounter a range of situations and issues when engaging with their peers.
Within training and supervision with youth peer supporters development of skills focused on the following:
Communication skills
Verbal communication
Written communication skills
Body language
Active listening
Possible barriers to communication
Basic counselling
How to provide information
Decision making skills
Conflict resolution
Decision making
Developing plans for the future
Professional conduct and demeanour
Legal considerations/ issues
Referral issues (knowing when and how to refer students )
Confidentiality and boundaries
Team work (how to work effectively as a team)
Working independently
Duty of care
I would like to thank Emily Parker , Camilla West , Zoe Finch , Laura Degaris , Mel Muholland and Rhoni Mcfarlane for providing some great workshops throughout the two day programs and Nikki Taylor , Chad Matthew and Cortney Ellingham who acted as senior Peer Support Mentors throughout the training program . Special thanks to our vice captains Benny and Cara who spoke to students about the impact of positive leadership.
The overall aim of the Peer Support program at Wirreanda is to build the self-esteem and confidence of younger students by connecting them through friendship and structured activities with older students, this links directly with our PERMA principles.
